What is your affiliation with the HHS Innovation Exchange?
The HHS Hamilton Early Warning Score (HEWS) project was chosen as one of the first projects when IBM and HHS started this collaboration. I am the project lead for HEWS and have guided the introduction over the past eight years.
What’s the biggest challenge in healthcare that you’d like to tackle?
Making the hospital a safer place. In Canada, hospital errors occur more frequently than airplane crashes or serious car accidents. We can do better. It is simple things like standard approaches to care that make the biggest difference.
What is the most rewarding part of the work that you do?
Seeing learners engaged in these projects. Knowing that they, too are invested in making a difference. And not hearing code blue called for days and days when I am working in the hospital.
Where do you look for inspiration to help fuel your ideas and energy at work?
Often, it comes from teaching something or reading. I am naturally curious so I am often thinking of new ways of doing something based on some idea I’ve heard about.
What’s the one thing you think that great innovators do differently?
Innovators have a “can do” attitude that is persistent and pervasive.
